2010 FDC YOUNG DESIGNER SHOW

Photobucket
Maria and I went out again last Saturday looking for unknown talented designers, and we ended up at the Young Designer Show 2010. It’s a really unique event that showcases up and coming multicultural designers who have excelled creatively and academically. I’ve included my favourites in this post – it’s a very pic-heavy post, so get ready for it…

THE MODELS
I was blown away by how beautiful the models were, and kind of dissapointed that I haven’t seen them anywhere else. Some of them definitely should be all over the place and I can’t figure out why they’re not… hmmmmm (the first model pictured here was our host Annaliese Dayes from Britain’s Next Top Model)

THE DESIGNERS (in order presented)
MAKEDA GETACHEW

This collection made me want to listen to M.I.A. – the vibe was really urban and crisp. My favourites were the simple one-pieces with small rosette cloth details.

CHERRELLE STRACHAN
This collection featured lots of exaggerated panels to accentuate curves, and was inspired by DNA’s double helix wrapped around the body.

LEEANNE RIPLEY-GARRETT
Leeanne Ripley-Garrett (yep, she was at the La Geneve North Event too!) won the category of Raducical Designer. She put on the most amazing show, and was so humble.

KANYINSOLA ONALAJA

I was SO excited about this designer – how does she make tie-dye so classy?! I could see myself wearing these garments.

LEANDA BOATSWAIN

Leanda was inspired by calm Caribbean beaches, and I loved her direction. Breezy, Halston-esque, minimal and cool.

GBEMISOLA OKUNLOLA

The idea behind this was to combine African fabrics with Western tailoring, and convey “African theme = English Dream.” I thought it was cool, especially the way she incorporated traditional fabrics.

LINDA COBBINA (Single Garment Entry)

Reminiscent of Vivienne Westwood! Click the thumbnail below to see a clearer pic Maria took in the lobby.

SHANICE BRYCE (Single Garment Entry) I absolutely loved this little dress – it reminded me of a glam fishbowl.

RACHEL OTTO (Single Garment Entry)
Rachel’s piece won the single garment entry contest. I think it was really well fitted.

That’s it! It was a really fun night with lots of talented young designers, one or two of whom I am keeping my eye on. Many thanks to Leeanne Ripley-Garrett for the invitation and Joanna Marcella for putting this huge event together. Also, thanks very much to Maria Ling for the incredible photography.

I’M NOT THERE

My brain has become allergic to most of the clothing I see and instead become inundated with other things. After all, it’s all interlinked — you dress the way you feel, you feel the way you think, you think about what you’re interested in… So, I hope you don’t mind if I post on creative inspiration and events for a while. And even if you do….. lol

[I'm Not There is a movie about Bob Dylan that came out a few years ago, with lots of different actors playing Bob Dylan (including Cate Blanchette). For some reason a pic I took of my shadow looks exactly like the front cover of the DVD lol]

Handbag Heaven

Everyone knows what a passion I have for shopping and one of my favorite purchases of all is a fashion handbag! I am lucky enough to have some great stores in our local malls here but you only have so much selection when you are working with an inventory. Online is of course a whole different story and I have found a couple of great sites I will share you all but you have to remember you heard about from me first! Promise?

Ok then, the first one I like is sokubag.com because this site is completely wild with excellent replica handbags. Your bff wont’ know the difference unless you confess over a cocktail that it is not the real thing! The sukobag is really well laid out with the brand names down the left side. All you need to do it click on your favorite designer and look at what they offer. Super nice bags with lookalike attraction but the prices are really low! I love it.

Another site is a great blog with news about the latest styles and great photos to see how lovely they are. It is called louis-vuitton-news.com and you can’t help but like the minimal style and the focus on the handbags. Everyone loves Louis Vuitton handbags and when you love something so much you dedicate your blog to it then you can make magic! I will never own enough handbags or shoes so I visit both places often. Check them out!
